Centenary of Scouting in Nottinghamshire celebrated at County Camp
Over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend 3000 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Network members & Leaders celebrated the 100th Birthday of Nottinghamshire Scouts with a fun-packed Hollywood-themed weekend at Walesby Forest Activity Centre.
Worksop Explorers help National Trust at Clumber Park
In June 4th Worksop (St John’s) Explorer Scouts visited Clumber Park with the leaders and under the supervision of warden Jeff Dodds and helped by picking up the litter left by visitors and also, after receiving safety instructions, have helped with the trimming of trees and bushes to allow safe access to areas used by the general public. In due course and after completing further activities they will receive a community badge.
Joint District Beaver Scout Sleepover
10-12 July 53 Beavers from South West Notts District and 10 Beavers from Kirkby in Ashfield enjoyed a sleepover with an Hawaiian theme at Sherbooke campsite. The weather during the day was kind and the youngsters were able to take advantage of the climbing tower, archery, tunnelling and the bouncy castle. Crafts included making grass skirts, garlands, sun visors and windmills. The youngsters also practiced their new-found skill of limbo dancing to the sound of a steel band.
Over 100 Scouts picnic in style at Nottingham Castle
Sunday 19 July: Eating together, learning how to climb and playing games was the order of the day for the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers who took part in the Big Lunch.
53rd Nottingham Cub creates new Scout Badge
9 year old Fabian Ellans, from the 53rd Nottingham Scout Group in Aspley won a competition to design the Nottinghamshire Scouts Centenary badge competition.
With over 1000 entry's Fabain beat off the competition with a badge based on the Major Oak and the famous three fingered Scout sign.
Every member of the Nottinghamshire Scouts is able to wear the badge on their uniform until May 2010 when the centenary year will end. "I can't believe I won, it came as such a surprise and it's really cool that everyone will be wearing my badge" Said Fabian.
Scouts real Life Savers
Notts Scouts donated £5,610 to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Queen's Medical Centre.
As part of the Centenary celebrations the Nottinghamshire Scouts wanted to 'do a good turn' for other young people, so Groups started to raise funds in as many ways as possible from bag packing, to sponsored climbs and canoe-a-thons, the Scouts really did 'do their best' to help others.
Scout Leader, Paul Neal, who started the fund raising said "I am so grateful to all of the groups who donated to such a worthwhile charity. The PICU do an amazing job and the Scouts are very proud to support the work they do"
Scouts to start 'Grow Your Own'
Beaver Scouts across Nottinghamshire have teamed up with a Bulwell based home and garden company to look at grow your own food and healthy eating.
The initiative launched by Richard Sankey & Son, a leading UK manufacturer of garden and horticultural products, is enabling Scout Groups across Nottinghamshire to learn about the benefits associated with ‘growing it yourself’ and healthy eating.
Sea Scouts 100th Birthday National Jamboree
July: Sea Scouts from Notts joined with 2500 Scouts from across the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Australia and the USA to celebrate 100 years of Sea Scouts for their Jamboree at the National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont from 1st to 8th August.. In addition to a wide range of water activities they also took part in climbing, archery, bungee runs, adventure courses, grass skiing and circus skills.

Having completed a five day cycle challenge, which started at St Bees Head in Cumbria and finished 230 miles across the country at Robin Hoods Bay in North Yorkshire, the Scouts are now using pedal power to collect their sponsership money.
Speaking of the challenge Nathan Heinke, 17 from Wollaton said "It was the trip of a life time! Being able to do something so enjoyable and help other people has been great". "The three of us got on really well, working as a team really did help us to complete the challenge, whether it was telling jokes, helping to carry equipment or sharing food it all kept us going!"
Arnold Scouts get Gold
August: 3 Scouts from 1st Arnold and Woodthorpe Scouts received the highest Scouting accolade for
their age. The 'Chief Scout's Gold Award' is awarded to Scouts who have completed a variety of
challenges including global awareness, outdoor expeditions and community projects, to name but
a few. In total it takes around three years work to acheive the award.
Chilwell Scout Leader climbs Kilimanjaro for charity
2nd Chilwell Scout Leader & Assistant County Commissioner, Jonathan Tait, has raised over £3,500 in sponsorship and donations for The Alzheimer’s Society. Jonathan started his fund raising with his 40th birthday, generating £1500 from friends and family from a charity auction and asking for donations instead of gifts.
